European Parliament: New Regulations on Packaging.

8 March 2024

On Nov. 22, 2023, the European Parliament published new European-wide packaging legislation to counter the steady increase in waste and promote reuse and recycling.

MEPs approved the report with 426 votes in favor, 125 against, and 74 abstentions.

The new rules require all packaging to be recyclable, satisfying strict requirements to be defined through secondary legislation. Some temporary exemptions are provided, such as for food packaging made of wood and wax.

In addition, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are calling for EU countries to ensure that 90% of materials in packaging (plastic, wood, ferrous metals, aluminum, glass, paper, and cardboard) are collected separately by 2029.

And the plastic pots used in floriculture? In the new text, flower and plant pots have been categorized as a production factor, excluding them from the packaging category. This will permit not to burden floriculture production with additional burdens regarding the use and disposal of plastic pots.
