The FAI – Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano presents the autumn edition of Tre Giorni per il Giardino, which will take place from Friday, October 18 to Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the Castello e Parco di Masino in Caravino (TO). This event is one of Italy’s most important and appreciated floriculture exhibitions and has aimed for over thirty years to inspire an ever-growing audience with a passion for gardening, green care, and the knowledge of plants, flowers, fruits, and – especially this year – seeds.
In this edition, curated by Emanuela Orsi Borio, over one hundred nurserymen from across Italy and highly specialized exhibitors will present plants and ideas for the garden, showcasing and suggesting, alongside traditional solutions, new possibilities and original practices that promote not only beauty but also, increasingly, sustainability in green care. Even on a small scale, such as a private garden or even a home balcony, we can all contribute to the health of the Planet by mitigating the impacts of the environmental crisis and adapting to its effects with the “right” choices and behaviors.

As with every edition, there will also be a rich and extensive program of technical demonstrations, workshops, conferences, and meetings led by sector experts. This year’s theme is titled “The Possible Garden: Seeds for the Garden and for Tomorrow’s World.” What will Nature be like tomorrow? The environment around us, whether natural or cultivated, is influenced by human intervention, both positively and negatively. Recognizing this responsibility, it is up to us, on both small and large scales, to manage today the creation, recreation, and management of natural environments that can play crucial roles in climate and ecological balance. So, what are the “right” plants to sow and cultivate, whether in a forest, a cultivated field, a balcony, or a historic garden like those managed by FAI? The choice of seeds and practices of renaturalization or rewilding present a concrete opportunity to recover or repurpose neglected, abandoned, or degraded spaces, which can instead express rich biodiversity with significant benefits for the environment and for all of us who inhabit it.

Climate Change and Extreme Events: Effects on the Plant World
The acceleration and impacts of climate change are now evident in every sector of terrestrial systems, with significant cascading consequences for the economy, particularly affecting natural ecosystems and agriculture. During the meeting, the causes, evidence, and likely future scenarios of the climate crisis will be presented on both a global and local scale, with particular reference to the expected evolution of phenomena most impacting the agricultural and gardening sectors: increased heatwaves, overall reduction in frosts but with more damage from late frost on vegetation in early phenological development, shorter snow cover duration, changes in precipitation seasonality and water availability, increased evaporation, and more extreme events (hailstorms, windstorms). A varied set of effects with few benefits and many new threats and challenges that will need to be considered in sector planning.

Seeds
A forest reborn after a fire; a maximum-security vault at the Arctic Circle; planting billions of trees; a high-fashion garment; coffee and a croissant. All these are stories of seeds. But what lies behind this simple yet ingenious plant invention? When did it originate and why? How does it function and what powers does it give to those who produce or consume it? A journey into the world of seeds, the forests they will become, and the future they are already telling us.

Presentation of the book ‘La natura selvatica del giardino: Elogio delle erbacce’ (Einaudi 2024)
Wild is a world that does not adhere to our rules and develops stubbornly wherever it can. “Wild garden” is an oxymoron: there is no garden without a gardener. Yet, scientific dissemination in recent years has given us new environmental awareness. Can a modern garden afford to control all the nature it comprises? And can it do so without considering its impact on a much broader system? Is the garden where everything is under control still beneficial for the gardener? And for all the other organisms that enable its life and keep it in balance? The garden, which is the point of contact between the artificial and the spontaneous, must find a new dimension to engage with the plants and living beings that inhabit it. There are no more weeds, only poor gardeners who do not know how to act without going against nature.

“Italy is increasingly rich in wild animals. Are we prepared?”**
The increase in forests, along with the abandonment of mountain and hill agriculture, has contributed to the rise in the number of deer, roe deer, chamois, and wild boars. Wolves, which prey on these animals, have returned. Human beings do not always manage to adapt to a peaceful coexistence with wild animals, often being overtaken by ancestral and unfounded fears.

Plants on the Move: THE GREAT EXPLORERS
Putting down roots and growing: trees and herbs evoke images of immobility and stillness, but… they are full of life! Great travelers through time and space, plants move a lot; they are incredible navigators, explorers, and pioneers, using extraordinary means to relocate. Rolling, persuading animals to transport them, floating and drifting on water, flying in the wind, carried by birds, catapulting their seeds, hitchhiking, traveling with regular travel documents or clandestinely aboard trains and planes, silently clinging to the soles of our shoes—plants invent the most ingenious ways to reach distant lands, occupy as much space as possible, and traverse eras, inviting us to rethink the meaning of the word “boundaries.”

The event is held under the patronage of the Piedmont Region, the Metropolitan City of Turin, and the Municipality of Caravino.
