“The funds are welcome, provided they are just the first step” says Massimo Bressan, president of Coldiretti Padova (federation of Italian farmers), referring to the €200,000 funding approved by Regione Veneto to support the farmers suffering from damage caused by proliferation of the brown marmorated stink bug.
This first measure, which was announced a few days after strong complaints from the farmers, must be part of a wider, more effective action plan to deal with the brown marmorated stink bug infestation, which has been causing problems to agriculture in various provinces for two years, according to Coldiretti Padova. According to the federation, damage in the Veneto region is estimated to be 100 million euros
, of which at least 25 million euros are in the province of Padova and in particular in Bassa Padovana, the area just south of Padova. The measures to control and prevent the damage will be one of the focuses at Flormart
, the benchmark trade fair for the horticultural sector, which will take place from 26th-28th September 2019 in Padova.
“In our province we can rely on a new and authoritative ally
”, says Bresson, “namely the Padova Chamber of Commerce
. They have shown great attention and sensitivity to the local primary sector which has been put to the test by the new emergency. The Council immediately made itself available, to the best of its ability, to identify the best measures, including on the research front, involving the University of Padova, to counteract the spread of this alien insect. We wish to thank the Chamber of Commerce and make ourselves fully available to collaborate in order to identify the ideal solutions to tackle the problem”.
